New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson on Monday hoped to be back in time for the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup as he is currently recovering from his injury.

Williamson, 32, underwent knee surgery in April 2023 after he ruptured his Anterior Crucial Ligament (ACL) while taking a catch for Gujarat Titans against Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) season 16 on March 31 in Ahmedabad.

The cricketer was seen walking with crutches after he landed in New Zealand in April.

However, the Kiwi is now in recovery and is desperate to get back on the field as soon as possible.

"Very much just trying to keep it week-to-week at the moment," Williamson said on Monday. "I haven't had such a long-term injury before but talking to other people that have, the journey is a bit of a long one so if you look too far ahead, it probably can become a little bit daunting.”

Williamson also stated that he is not getting ahead of time and is taking his recovery on a week-to-week basis while knowing that it is a long journey.

"Whereas, one week at a time, ticking off those small markers, those little wins that are nice to experience. But also knowing that the journey won't be completely smooth and you have a few setbacks along the way that you have to navigate," he added.

The Kiwi also guided New Zealand to a World Test Championship (WTC) 2021 victory after beating India in the final in Southampton. He also scored 101 runs in two innings.

Williamson, who has scored 6554 runs in ODIs at an average of 47.83, said any training he was doing was "elementary" at the moment and he looked forward to getting back in the nets.

"Probably more for sanity and changing things up... just nice to mix up all the gym work and the physio work and rehab specific stuff to spend a bit of time with some of the other guys that are training," he said. "Super keen to get back in the nets, for sure."
